Conference of Parties: Agenda of all COPs 1-29?

Introduction of COP

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) holds an annual summit where governments of 196 participatory countries and the European Union gather to discuss and negotiate global climate policy. These summits are referred to as Conference of Parties or COPs, and suffix digits show the conference or meeting order number. Every year they are held in different countries, where thousands of people gather at one platform to participate as speakers or audiences. Currently, COP28 is going on in Dubai and roughly 70000 attendees are there to attend, including members of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), business leaders, students, youth, climate scientists, locals, the media, and various other experts and stakeholders.

Goal of COP

The primary goal of the COP is to assess progress in addressing climate change, as well as to negotiate and implement measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Outcomes of COPs

Several notable agreements have arisen from the COP meetings, including the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, which set legally enforceable targets for lowering greenhouse gas emissions and keeping global warming well below 2°C over pre-industrial levels.

Most successful COPs

All of the cops had an agenda to reduce global temperatures and climate change but some of the cops were huge successes. The most successful were COP 3, COP 15, COP 21, and COP 26. In COP3, The Kyoto Protocol was adopted, which established legally enforceable targets for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Similarly, COP 15 and 21 were successful because they achieved the below 2 degrees Celsius global temperature limit and 1.5 degrees respectively. COP 26 was also a great accomplishment because it resulted in the increment of the financial aid of developing countries to adopt the Glasgow Climate Pact.
